It was first opened on 1 December 1868 by the Great Eastern Railway on their main line and two additional tracks (normally used by fast services) were provided in 1934 under London and North Eastern Railway ownership. Train services are provided by Greater Anglia and the station is in Travelcard Zone 6. Ticket barriers were installed in 2011. It is planned that Crossrail will stop here when it opens in 2018.<ref name="Crossrail 2018">Template:Cite news</ref>

Typical off-peak service from the station is:

  • 6 tph (trains per hour) to Shenfield
  • 6 tph to London Liverpool Street
